Marvel drops the first trailer for Captain America: Civil War

It’s here! After seeing leaked promo art, and gifs from secretly recorded scenes of the trailer months earlier, the damn thing is finally here! Check it out below:

What I like about this, is that even only from a few minutes, you can tell the movie doesn’t look or feel like Avengers 3. It’s a Captain America movie that just happens to have most of the Avengers in it. And that poster, simple yet effective.

Marvel has a Fake News YouTube Channel

A clip teasing a news report by WHIH News appeared online today. If you’re not familiar with it, WHIH News is a news station in the Marvel Cinmatic Universe. They’ve already popped up in movies such as The Incredible Hulk, and the Daredevil series. The clip features Leslie Bibb’s character, Christine Everheart (the one that asked Tony Stark to comment on being called “the da Vinci of our time”) highlighting a story on the aftermath of the events in Age of Ultron, and another story on Scott Lang, AKA Ant-Man. In the clip, Christine says that Scott Lang is set to be released from prison on July 17, the same day Ant-Man hits theaters… clever.

-First Official Image of the DC Trinity Released

At long last, DC finally released a photo of Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Henry Cavill suited up together as Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman. It’s not fan art, it’s the real thing. The three are on the cover of this year’s Entertainment Weekly Comic-Con Preview issue.

What can I say? This magazine cover should go down in history. It captures the first time cinematic versions of these characters are seen together by regular muggles like you and I. And I’m sorry Christian Bale fans, but Ben Affleck has the coolest Batsuit (Batsuits, actually) of all time!

DC also released an image of Batman and Superman having a standoff. Yeah, contrary to what Zack Snyder says, at least a part of this movie is based on The Dark Knight Returns.

My Spider-Man Theory might be Totally Wrong

New Spidey info was brought to us yesterday, and it claims that a few of the actors that tried to swing into the MCU as Spider-Man screen tested with Robert Downy Jr., AKA Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, AKA Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist, on the set of Captain America: Civil War.  According to this source, Tom Holland was the only actor that also screen tested with Chris Evans. So it looks like teenage Spidey will be in Civil War, and we won’t see Peter Parker kicking ass as an adult for another 10 years when Tom Holland is 29. Good luck Tommy. We’re all counting on you.

Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man Plans: My Theory

Marvel has officially announced that English actor Tom Holland will take up the mantle as the third Spider-Man. It’s taken them a lot of time to finally come up with a decision but fans seem pretty OK about this one. The movie will be directed by Jon Watts, who so far has directed films I’ve never heard of like Cop Car starring Kevin Bacon. However, Marvel hasn’t been too clear about the official plans for the character. Here’s what I think will happen:

1. Tom Holland will be in prequel films released by Sony

I believe that Sony may have their own version of Spider-Man to work with, and Marvel another. Because of Tom Holland’s age, he will definitely be playing a teenage Spidey. Kevin Feige stated that Spider-Man has been swinging around for a while, but two a year of high school isn’t a long time. Marvel will probably have an older actor playing an adult Spidey in their movies, especially since Spider-Man doesn’t join or interact with the Avengers much until he’s an adult, and Sony will have creative control over a younger Spidey so that their films don’t intertwine too much with Marvel’s.

2. A different Spider-Man actor will be revealed to us in Captain America: Civil War

Marvel stated that Tom Holland will appear in a solo Spider-Man flick due out in 2017. However, rumors and a recent slip of the tongue by Brian Michael Bendis sort of confirming an appearance by Spider-Man in Captain America 3, clash with what Marvel addressed today. The biggest role that Spider-Man plays in Civil War is revealing his secret identity to the world, but that’s something that adult Spidey does after years of being Spider-Man. I think a different actor has been cast as Civil War’s Spidey, and we won’t know who that actor is until the reveal scene in the movie. That would be a perfect way to introduce Spider-Man into the universe. The real audience will be just as shocked at the reveal as the fictional audience in the movie.

3. Teenage Spidey isn’t ready to face the craziness of Infinity War

Part of my reason for thinking that their will be a teenage Spidey and an adult Spidey is because teen Spidey doesn’t have the experience, the skills, or the intellect to deal with the chaos that Thanos will inflict in Avengers 3. Sure, Peter Parker’s a smart kid, but he’s way smarter after he gets his master’s degree. Also, adult Spidey would have had a lot more experience fighting supervillians. I can’t see teenage Spidey being able to handle anything that Thanos will cause with the Inifinity Stones. He’s intellect definitely won’t match with Tony Stark’s, but it will be on par once he’s grown up.

(Couldn’t find a high quality image of Thanos. Here’s Josh Brolin instead.)

I’m Back

Hello to all the fantastic followers of this blog and to anyone else reading it. I haven’t written a post in a while, not since the first Daredevil trailer came out (wow that long?). I was too busy being a student. My last year at university took a hold of me, and I got enclosed in a cage writing essays and a book. Well, I’m happy to announce that I graduated U of T last week, with distinction at best. I even shook hands with Roberto Benigni at convocation and told him what an amazing film Life is Beautiful was. Needless to say he was humbled to hear me tell him that, despite the fact that the man won an Oscar for it and has been told the same things by thousands of people. Either way, I’m back in the blogging sphere, so let’s recap the insane amount of comic glory that has been at our midst since my last post.

1. Daredevil

So I managed to watch the entire series in a week instead of two days thanks to the amount of homework I had. It was the best series I had ever seen. I couldn’t find a single thing wrong with it. I didn’t even care that the red suit came to play at the very last episode because the story was so good. And what a shocking level of violence! The show really stands apart from the family-friendly tone of Marvel Studios’ films. More shockingly, at the end of the day, this show is still produced by Disney.

In more Daredevil news, I and other fans cannot express how excited we are to find out that Jon Bernthal (Shane from the The Walking Dead) has been cast in Season 2 as The Punisher. Hopefully Jason Statham is Bullseye.

2. The Avengers: Age of Ultron – Verdict

If you told me that 2012’s The Avengers wasn’t a good movie, or just an ok movie, I’d have difficulty speaking with you after that. There may be some slightly negative tension between us. If you told me that Age of Ultron was “meh,” I’d respect your opinion. Was it a bad movie? No. Was it an amazing, quotable film that should be hailed as one of the greatest superhero films of all time? No. I did enjoy watching it, it just didn’t meet my expectations. I liked the action scenes, but I didn’t like the story or some of the characterizations all that much. And I wasn’t too thrilled about an unnecessary character death. Again, Joss? Really?

3. Mad Max: Fury Road

It’s a fantastic movie. It’s loud. It’s mind-blowing. It’s like a next-level version of Road Warrior. Go watch it if you haven’t.

4. Suicide Squad

David Ayer’s Suicide Squad is still filming in Toronto. I live near Toronto, so it sucks that I missed the Batmobile chasing the Joker’s pink Ferrari. A friend of mine got some pretty incredible close-up shots of the action though. But all in all, Ben Affleck’s Batman has been confirmed not to just have a random 30 second cameo in the movie, but to be a part of an entire action scene with Jared Leto’s Joker. And the best part of all this, Toronto can be called Gotham City.

Marvel Goes Gritty: First Trailer Released for the Daredevil Series

Let me start by saying, I’ve been waiting months just to see a glimpse of footage from Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil series. Heck, it didn’t even have to be a full clip. A 2 second moving image would have sufficed. But that wait is long over, as Marvel has officially released the first trailer!

Alright, what can I say? This trailer is for lack of a better word… cool. Charlie Cox looks like he’s put everything he’s got into the role of Matt Murdock, and the back of Vincent D’Onofrio’s head signals that the Kingpin is going to be one of the most refreshing villains we’ve had in Marvel in a while. As one of the very few people on Earth, Asgard, Xandar, or any other world you can think of, that liked the Ben Affleck Daredevil film, I can say that this looks waaaay better. This one looks like it leaped off of something Frank Miller wrote in his sleep.

I think the most shocking part of this series is that it is set in the same universe as the Marvel films (The Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, etc). All the other films are a bit more light-hearted, but good for a wide audience. They’re the kind of movies that kids can watch and love, but they’re not kids movies, which keeps into the vein of the original Spider-Man movie. The Daredevil series, looks like it’s going to have an extremely gritty tone, and one that strays super far from the tone of the Marvel films. So I’m applauding both Marvel and Netflix for taking this series in different direction, one for fans of grittier superhero flicks. It shows that Captain America 2 and the final episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 weren’t the grittiest that Marvel could go.

We finally got a Fantastic 4 trailer

After hours of reading through criminology articles for a class, and getting through some podcast scripting, I felt my labour for the day was done. Next, as always, I jumped to comicbookmovie.com, hoping that I could geek out of some new images, trailers, or even rumors. Now, about 9 out of 10 times in two weeks do I find stuff that’s really exciting, but yesterday I was introduced to a page full of complaints about Josh Trank’s Fantastic 4 trailer.

Yes! A trailer was finally released, and I immediately clicked on the YouTube link, set the video to 1080p HD, and waited to be mesmerized.

I thought the trailer was… ok. It didn’t really show much, but it showed enough to get me excited for the movie. More so, it proved to my astonishment, that the movie is actually NOT a found footage film. That’s good news, because I believe that the filmmakers can be a lot more creative in terms of music and cinematography when making a regular film. Found footage films would limit them to making something too realistic, without any music and stunning shots. From what I’ve seen in this trailer, there is going to be a lot of impressive camera work and effects work. So far I can tell that a lot of time was spent into creating this distinct world for the film.

I have complete and utter faith in Josh Trank. Think about it for a second… if he could do a great job with creating his own original superhero film (Chronicle), one that wasn’t based on a comic, and phenomenally developed the characters in it, wouldn’t you agree that Trank is going to do a better job with already established characters?

But let give some criticism for a moment. Fox seems to be a bit too full of themselves and insecure at the same time, which I think is a bit of a bad public relations move. They start the trailer with the line, “From the studio that brought you X-Men: Days of Future Past.” Fox is counting on their most recent success to generate hype for this movie. Although DOFP was a thrilling movie, my favourite of 2014, Fox is responsible for movies that weren’t too hailed by critics and fans including X-Men: The Last Stand, and the first two Fantastic 4 movies (though I still enjoyed the first one).

As you can see at the end of the trailer, Fox has made the Marvel logo very ‘in your face.’ It’s even bigger than Fox’s logo. This shows insecurity. Is Fox trying to feed off of the success of Marvel Studios’ films and trying to get people to think that Marvel Studios were involved with this movie? Probably. It’s definitely not a way to get people to support your work, even though I think Trank’s movie will blow people’s minds.

Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four Movie is Apparently Complete… Where are the First Looks?

While promoting his adaptation of Mark Millar’s Kingsmen: The Secret Service, director Matthew Vaughn stated that he had watched Josh Trank’s take on the Fantastic Four. The director of X-Men: First Class went on to say that Trank’s film is good, and that fans of Trank’s previous movie Chronicle, should like his vision of the first superhero family.

If Matthew Vaughn has seen the film, then that must mean it’s done. We know from a photo released by the cast on Twitter that filming wrapped up last year, but no one was sure how long post-production would take. But if the movie is now in its viewable stage, why haven’t we gotten any first looks? Forget about seeing a trailer any time soon (there’s a rumor that there will be one during the Superbowl), Fox hasn’t even released an official photo yet! All we got were a couple of leaked images that weren’t enough to make anyone particularly psyched.

If Fox doesn’t give us a glimpse at the movie soon, interest is going to tumble down. If the first trailer is under 1 minute, it might not help much either unless it packs a lot of cool stuff in those few seconds. Star Wars VII is almost an entire year away, and we already got a teaser trailer for that. The new Fantastic Four movie is supposed to be released on August 7th of this year.

Agent Carter: More Noir than Marvel

The third episode of Marvel’s Agent Carter will premiere tonight, and if you haven’t caught the first two episodes yet, there’s a few things you should know. The show is perfect as a “noir” show, meaning that it makes fantastic use of its post WWII setting. The lighting and sets are eerie, and the plot is a great nod to old school crime flicks. However, it’s not what we’re used to from Marvel.

The show doesn’t rely on any superhero elements like we’ve seen from Marvel’s films and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. There’s been a few Captain America references (and definitely more to come) but for the most part, the show sticks to espionage drama. Contrary to popular belief, the show takes place before the establishment of S.H.I.E.L.D. Howard Stark has so far only appeared in the first episode, but part of the initial plot revolves around Howard Stark being a wanted fugitive. I therefore think Dominic Cooper will make a few more appearances this season.

If you’re looking for a show that flows along the lines of Marvel’s previous work, Agent Carter might disappoint you a bit. However, I’m sure that there will be a stronger connection between this show and the Marvel Cinematic Universe later on, just like how Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tied in to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I’ll keep watching the show because the story is intriguing, and the noir style makes it stand out from other shows on TV. It’s worth checking out so PVR it tonight if you can.
